Facilitate Learner Development and
Socialization (Core Competency 2):
Using Evidence-Based Approaches to Promote
and Evaluate Critical Thinking
In the past decade, schools at all levels have been challenged
to move from traditional teaching and assessment methods to newer evidence-based
approaches that stimulate students to learn in deep and meaningful ways. Too
often faculty haven’t had the time or opportunity to learn new approaches
that not only help students learn, but also make their lives easier and more
rewarding. The aim of this workshop is to help nurse educators to examine where
they stand in relation to using evidence-based tools and strategies for promoting
critical thinking; to promote discussion about commonly encountered challenges;
and to help them develop and refine teaching methods to include evidence-based
approaches. Participants have the opportunity to use evidence-based tools in
small groups, and are encouraged to find solutions and come to consensus on
issues and challenges related to teaching nursing process and critical thinking.
Objectives:
- Explain why there must be agreement among faculty on how
the terms evidence-based approaches, critical thinking, and nursing process
are defined.
- Address the relationship between nursing process and critical
thinking, according to ANA Standards of Practice.
- Describe how to use evidence-based critical thinking indicators
to promote and evaluate critical thinking
- Use evidence-based strategies to promote critical thinking
in students
- Identify ways to prioritize what you teach, rather than trying
to “teach it all”.
