Clinical Teaching, Evaluation, and Grading:
What You Need to Know

In this workshop the process of clinical evaluation in nursing is explored. Differences between formative and summative evaluation are discussed as they relate to clinical evaluation. The importance of developing a climate for learning and evaluation in the clinical setting and issues in evaluating and grading students’ clinical practice are discussed. Multiple strategies for evaluating clinical outcomes and competencies are described including how to develop an evidence-based clinical evaluation form. The workshop includes small group activities in which faculty develop strategies for evaluating clinical competencies in their courses.

Objectives:

  • Describe concepts to guide clinical teaching and selecting clinical learning activities.
  • Examine principles of clinical evaluation and grading in nursing.
  • Describe strategies for evaluating clinical outcomes and competencies in nursing.
