Improving Confidence in the Results of Multiple-Choice
Exams
This workshop provides an in-depth review of an important component
of the educator role: test development. In order to have confidence in the decisions
you make based on your multiple-choice exams, you need to have evidence of reliability
and validity of the test results. This workshop reviews the basic principles
of assessment and focuses on guidelines for developing classroom multiple-choice
exams based on the premise that good tests are made up of good test items. The
speaker demonstrates how to develop quality tests that have evidence of reliability
and validity and includes scores of practical tips for writing good questions
and numerous examples of "good" items, "bad" items, and
"before" and "after" items.
Objectives:
- Describe the need for confidence in the results of multiple-choice exams
- Identify the essential components of trustworthy classroom assessments
- Use item analysis to improve item quality and trustworthiness of test results
- Develop multiple-choice items to fit the designed blueprint
- Articulate a procedure for developing classroom assessments that produce
trustworthy results
