Guidelines for Completion of the Application

The objective of continuing education is the ongoing improvement of the individual for nursing practice, professional growth and career advancement. Material requested on the application is required in order to meet IACET (International Association for Continuing Education and Training) standards. The NLN uses principles of teaching and learning in the process of reviewing and evaluating CE offerings and grants approval to those that meet predetermined criteria of high quality programming. A list of Application Materials and their links can be found at the base of this page. Please provide all information requested. Incomplete applications will be returned without being reviewed.

TYPES OF PROGRAMS THE NLN APPROVES:

  • Programs that promote development of the faculty role.
  • Programs that are consistent with and advance the Mission of the NLN.

TYPES OF PROGRAMS THE NLN DOES NOT APPROVE:

  • Remedial or refresher course
  • Program that is an endorsement of a single product
  • Any promotion of unsafe practice
  • Program designed for lay persons or for health education of the public
  • Program in conflict with the Mission of the NLN
  • Employer orientation program

GENERAL APPLICATION GUIDELINES

  • One (1) contact hour equals sixty (60) minutes.
  • The awarding of contact hours (CEUs) is not retroactive. The date on which the program was approved is the date when CEUs can be awarded. (It is NOT the date that the application was submitted or received at the NLN)
  • Applications must be received at least four (4) weeks prior to the date on which the program will first be offered
  • Requests for expedited review will be honored within two (2) weeks for an additional fee of $50.00.
  • Application fees (check or money order) MUST accompany the application.
  • Application fees are not refundable.
  • Certificates cost $2.00 each.
  • Approval of contact hours is for a two (2) year period.
  • Program sponsors are required to maintain records for each program in a secure file for seven (7) years. These records must indicate the title of the program, the program number, the name and an identification number of all individuals who earned the CEUs, and date on which each individual completed the program.
PREPARE A NARRATIVE TO DESCRIBE:

  • The Target Population (for whom is the program designed?) Is the program designed for new or experienced nurse educators?
  • Indicate which of The Core Competencies of Nurse Educators identified by the Task Group on Nurse Educator Competencies that are addressed in the program.
  • Documentation of the Need for the Program. What evidence is there that the target population needs the material presented in this program? Include information from the literature, surveys, and member requests to support the need for the program.
  • For on-line or self study programs, provide Data regarding the calculation of time it takes learners to complete an online or self study program.
  • Evaluation of Learning. Copies of tests, case studies, and other evaluation tools must be included with the application.
  • Participants’ evaluation of their satisfaction with the speaker(s), content, and program details (environment, AV materials, registration, etc). Copy of the evaluation tool must be included with the application.
  • Distribution of Certificates. How will participants receive their certificate or be notified of unsuccessful achievement of the objectives?

COLUMN FORMAT GUIDELINES

  • The column format must be used and must be typed.
  • State the Learning Objectives clearly in behavioral terms. They should flow from the need for the program and reflect the target population’s level of experience/education.
  • Outline the content in enough detail to convey the essence of the material. Rewording the objective is not adequate.
  • The name of the faculty/speaker presenting the content must be included for each objective.
  • Describe how the learner has opportunity for interaction with the faculty/speaker/expert.
  • Indicate how much time is allotted for each objective or “cluster” of content.
  • Specify the instructional methods for each objective or “cluster” of content.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS:

  1. Sponsor Information and Fees Page (DOC) including Certificate Order
  2. Narrative
  3. Column Format (DOC). Please refer to the guidelines and sample provided to complete the Column Format.
  4. Copy of Program Evaluation Tool
  5. Copy of Learning Evaluation Tool(s)
  6. Biographical form (DOC) for each speaker/faculty/expert contributor
  7. Check or money order
