The NLN Collection at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania
The National League for Nursing (NLN) and the Bates Center joined forces to preserve the NLN’s rich history in an archival repository for scholarly historical research. In 2014 the Independence Foundation of Philadelphia awarded a matching grant to the NLN to begin the archival repository. The Foundation is supporting the NLN, in collaboration with the Bates Center, to preserve the NLN’s past so that the nursing community will have access to this rich history of nursing and nursing education.
Currently the NLN Collection is in its early stages. Eventually it will include a full repository of proceedings of annual conventions, minutes of meetings, biographical data of early leaders and correspondence detailing trends and historic milestones. The goal is to describe the development of nursing education standards for accreditation and faculty development, as well as documents that detail the transformative journey about how nursing organizations and nursing education leaders forged a tenuous and yet essential partnership over a century.
