DIANE J. SKIBA, PhD, FAAN

Associate Dean for Informatics, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, CO.

Personal Statement: The landscape of nursing education, like higher education, is quickly changing and in turn, placing new challenges and demands on faculty and learners. One such challenge is the growing use of technologies to provide accessible, flexible, convenient and just in time learning opportunities that transcend geographic and time boundaries. These learning opportunities are targeted to the growing new majority who are seeking lifelong learning. The growth in lifelong learning that being driven by the ever-increasing rate of change in knowledge and an ever- changing health care environment. The nursing shortage and the need to create new educational mobility models further exacerbate these challenges. In response to these challenges, new demands are being placed on nurse educators and learners. The changing roles of faculty and learners, the impact of technologies on the teaching-learning process, new educational models to deliver learning, and the need to shift from a teaching to a learning paradigm that fits with the new business designs are but a few of these current demands. As an educator, I believe the NLN can play a significant leadership role in addressing these challenges and helping nurse educators and learners to contend with the multitude of new demands. As a long-standing active member of NLN with a background in informatics and web-based education, I believe my knowledge and experience can help transform nursing education into a learner-centered model that supports best practices in teaching and learning and encourages the use of appropriate and ubiquitous technologies.
