Scholarly Writing Retreat: An NLN Mentoring Program

Program Description:

The NLN | Chamberlain College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education is pleased to continue the expansion of the NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat, now in its tenth year.

If you have recently completed a research study or innovative project but have not had the time to craft an article for publication, this workshop is for you. The NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat is designed to help nurse educators enhance writing skills and disseminate research findings and other work in scholarly publications. By the end of the retreat, our goal is for each participant to have a complete, edited paper ready for submission to a scholarly journal. Nurse clinicians or administrators who are not faculty are also eligible to apply. Again, having completed a research study or innovation is necessary for consideration. 

Although NLN Scholarly Writing Retreats take place during the course of a weekend, this is a yearlong experience that involves one-on-one telephone consultation, videoconferencing, and mentorship.

The retreat is led by Marilyn Oermann, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, the Thelma M. Ingles Professor of Nursing and director of evaluation and educational research at Duke University. The editor of Nurse Educator and the author or co-author of 15 books and more than 130 peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Oermann is joined by Leslie Block, managing editor of Nursing Education Perspectives, the NLN's research journal. Ms. Block was previously the managing editor of Nursing Research and senior editor of MCN, The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing.

The retreat will begin with a video conference approximately one month before the group meets on site. The face-to-face meeting will begin at noon on Saturday and end by 3:00 pm on Sunday. All meals will be provided, beginning with lunch on Saturday and ending with lunch on Sunday. Group and individual sessions will be scheduled at varied times throughout the retreats, and ample time and privacy will be available for writing.

Participants will be eligible to earn 1.2 CEUs after completing an online, post-retreat evaluation.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria: 
Due to the nature of the program, space is limited to 12 participants. Selected participants will be chosen through a competitive application process (sample online application form (DOC)).  Preference will be given to members of the NLN, either as individual members or through their agency membership.

Applicants must have recently completed a research project or literature review or have another topic appropriate for development into a manuscript, and must submit a completed application form. The application form includes the purpose, target audience, key data that will be evidenced, and the Core Competencies of Nurse Educators that will be addressed, along with a personal statement describing the applicant's interest in participating in this retreat and greatest challenge with regard to scholarly writing.

Upon notification of acceptance, participants will be asked to sign an agreement indicating their understanding of their responsibilities prior to the retreat as follows: Within two weeks of acceptance, participants must schedule a telephone call with the retreat leader to discuss the topic, plan work on an outline, and review potential journals for submission. The leader will read the participant's outline and provide feedback leading to an initial draft of the manuscript. At least two weeks prior to the retreat, the leader will review the draft manuscript and provide initial editing and advice.

During the retreat, participants will receive assistance in preparing a manuscript suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. With the understanding that most manuscripts submitted for publication require revision prior to acceptance, the retreat leaders will work on revisions with participants for a period of time not to exceed one year.

The NLN is actively seeking ways to advance our diversity goal. Applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and/or papers that address diversity in nursing education in some manner are encouraged. Preference will also be given to papers that address the NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education.
