Centers of Excellence in Nursing EducationTM
2004 Winners
Three outstanding schools of Nursing were recognized at the Annual National Faculty Meeting as the first NLN Centers of Excellence for Nursing Education. Representing diverse student bodies, each school was recognized for extraordinary accomplishments in creating environments that promote student learning and professional development. NLN president Joyce Murray, CEO Ruth Concoran, and president-elect Tony Bargagliotti presented handsome awards to representatives from each of the three programs.
The
Community College of Philadelphia
The Community
College of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA is a
comprehensive urban college, the largest degree granting
institution in Philadelphia and the largest single point
of entry into higher education for students of color in Pennsylvania.
The nursing program is characterized by a culturally diverse
student body with high retention rates … and NCLEX pass rates
that consistently exceed the state-wide average. CCP has
consistently implemented exciting curriculum innovations,
including a fascinating and most successful Zip Code Project,
accelerated career ladder options at entrance to and exit
from the nursing program, an innovative, integrated curriculum
that challenges traditional assumptions and establishes new
approaches to teaching gerontology and community-based care,
and co-learner relationships between students and faculty.
The faculty at CCP are committed to extending health promotion/disease
prevention services to vulnerable populations in the community
surrounding the College through a service learning initiative
that is recognized nationally and that produces outstanding
outcomes for students and the community itself. Many of these
innovative curriculum projects -- along with faculty development
activities and student scholarships -- have been funded by
foundations and community partners. It is easy to see why
the Community College of Philadelphia has been designated
as an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing EducationTM.
The
University of South Dakota
The University
of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD offers an associate degree nursing program that was founded in response to the healthcare needs of the rural and often isolated communities in the State. This responsiveness to the needs of the community remains a hallmark of the program. The faculty at USD have implemented many initiatives to meet the needs of the people of South Dakota by delivering the nursing program to the student at four outreach campuses in addition to the main campus … rather than expecting the student to come to the program … and by tailoring learning experiences and student-faculty relationships that are relevant to a diverse student population. Long before many of us even thought of using distance learning to deliver a nursing program, the faculty at the University of South Dakota Department of Nursing were doing it! And they have had enormous success with this model. Their goal is to be the best publicly-funded associate degree nursing program in the nation, and their innovative program certainly is moving them in that direction, making them most deserving of designation as an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing EducationTM.
Villanova
University
Villanova University in Villanova, PA offers
a baccalaureate and a master’s program, as well as a new doctoral
program designed to prepare teacher-scholars. All of these programs
clearly reflect Catholic Augustinian values by focusing on the individual
learner and service to the community. The culture in the College
of Nursing at Villanova is laden with mutual respect among administrators,
faculty and students. It is designed to enhance students’ habits
of inquiry, and the practices of service learning are evident throughout.
In addition, faculty regularly research the effectiveness of learning
strategies and use the findings of those investigations to continually
strengthen the program. The strong student advisement system, combined
with small class sizes and the faculty commitment to excellence,
enable a full assessment of each student’s learning needs, the establishment
of realistic, customized learning goals, and ongoing assessment
of each student’s understanding of a subject matter. One can easily
see why Villanova University has been designated as an NLN Center
of Excellence in Nursing EducationTM.
