Villanova University College of Nursing

Through international experiences, students develop a global perspective and provide service to diverse cultures and underserved populations. Through close mentoring relationships between faculty and students and attention to fostering the development of students as leaders in the profession, learners and teachers alike influence the profession at regional and national levels. Through innovative, inventive, and evidence-based teaching-learning experiences that are implemented in technology-driven clinical simulation laboratories and small group learning environments, student learning is enhanced. And within environments that foster respect, trust and empowerment, excellence is clearly evident.

The Villanova University College of Nursing was among the first group of schools to be named an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education. That honor was well deserved when it was bestowed in 2004, and as a result of the sustained exceptional work of faculty and students in Creating Environments that Promote Student Learning and Professional Development, the honor continues to be well deserved.

University of South Dakota Department of Nursing

Since receiving initial designation in 2004 for their excellent work in Creating Environments that Promote Student Learning and Professional Development, the students and faculty in this school have sustained and enhanced excellence. The National League for Nursing therefore awarded continuing designation as an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education 2007-2010 to the University of South Dakota Department of Nursing.

Guided by a strong desire to contribute to the university’s vision of being the best publicly-funded small university in the nation and the best publicly-funded associate degree nursing program in the nation, the nursing faculty at the University of South Dakota direct their energies toward providing a quality, learner-centered educational experience for their students. They make exquisite use of technology to reach students across a vast geographical area, they partner with students to create a community of active co-learners, and they emphasize thinking and responsibility for one’s own learning.

The non-traditional learners from diverse backgrounds who enroll at this school challenge faculty to be creative in their approaches to teaching and learning, to design and implement a highly flexible curriculum, to understand and respond to individual learning needs, and to design experiences that develop self-awareness, facilitate respect, and demonstrate caring. Without question, faculty rise to that challenge again and again. The exemplary leadership of faculty and the generous spirit of students exemplify professionalism and inspire engagement in civic activities, provision of community service, and pursuit of professional leadership roles.

Saint Xavier University School of Nursing

The designation of the Saint Xavier University School of Nursing as an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education was awarded for their exceptional and sustained efforts to Create Environments that Promote Student Learning and Professional Development. Through promotion of a culture of intentional caring, which is based on a collective vision of a supportive and collegial environment, students are challenged and helped to meet their full potential.

Despite minimal external funding, faculty exploit their creativity and take risks to create and test innovative pedagogical approaches designed to enhance student learning. They use findings from research as they develop new approaches, and these evidence-based initiatives support students’ efforts to query and reflect more deeply on professional values and concerns. The story told by this school of nursing is a powerful narrative of the significance of person, the importance of values, and the primacy of caring.

Community College of Philadelphia Department of Nursing

The collective vision of faculty in the Department of Nursing is based on a shared commitment to student success. This vision incorporates support of students, service to the local community and to the profession, and scholarship that includes evidence-based practice, evaluation of student learning, and discovery of factors that impact student learning. There is no question that the primary concern of this faculty group is student success.

Through faculty-student interactions, student engagement, collaboration to improve the health of vulnerable populations in Center City Philadelphia and commitment, the nursing faculty of the Community College of Philadelphia document the extensive support they provide to students through mentoring, interactive learning, and impressive student/faculty partnerships that individualize learning. Through the productive and fulfilling partnerships with health care institutions and a variety of traditional and innovative community-based facilities, service is provided to highly vulnerable populations throughout the city.

Students and faculty alike are committed to excellence, and their combined efforts related to support, service, and scholarship are making a difference in the lives of the students and those to whom they provide care. The Department of Nursing at the Community College of Philadelphia has created and sustained an Environment that Promotes Student Learning and Professional Development.
