National League for Nursing - Excellence Initiatives
2010-2015 Centers of Excellence Designees
The Community College of Philadelphia

The Community College of Philadelphia, the city’s only public, two-year
college, is the largest single point of entry into higher education for minorities
in Pennsylvania. Appointed an NLN Center of Excellence in 2004 and again in
2007, the Community College of Philadelphia continues to embrace the standards
of excellence inherent in the Center of Excellence program, creating a caring
environment that is intellectually and culturally dynamic.
Educating an underserved population with limited resources, faculty challenge
their students to develop a sense of inquiry and curiosity, and to choose a
road that immerses them in opportunities for learning and growth. By teaching
students “how to learn,” they educate nurses who will embrace evidence-based
practice, best practices, technology, and lifelong learning.
Through the support of students, service to the local community, and commitment
to scholarship, faculty at the Community College of Philadelphia engage in activities
to foster student success. Mentoring and interactive, individualized learning
strategies promote faculty-student partnerships. Partnerships with multiple
agencies within the community provide service to vulnerable, urban populations.
The School of Nursing’s commitment to scholarship is demonstrated through
creative curricular design, the promotion of student inquiry, and research to
determine the impact of innovation on student learning.
It is clear that the School of Nursing at the Community College of Philadelphia
has created and sustained environments that Enhance Student Learning and Professional
Development. The National League for Nursing is pleased to bestow upon them
the privilege of designation as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education
for the third time! We are delighted that Dr. Barbara McLaughlin and five other
representatives of the school are here to celebrate this designation and we
congratulate all of you for the exceptional work you continue to do.
The University of South Dakota

The University of South Dakota was one of the first schools designated as an
NLN Center of Excellence in 2004 and was awarded continuing designation in 2007.
Located in a rural state, the nursing department has developed an innovative,
user-friendly educational delivery system designed to eliminate learner access
barriers. The school’s associate degree program is offered on four campuses
and via a distance-based structure to provide highly effective efforts to enhance
student learning.
With an emphasis on learning through the use of technology-based teaching and
learning modalities, faculty engage students in an active learning process.
Through the use of multiple educational strategies that enhance clinical reasoning
and problem-solving abilities, students are helped to reach their highest potential
and develop professional values and an appreciation of life-long learning. Student-faculty
partnerships promote a community of active learners in an environment of mutual
respect.
Delivery of the nursing program on five campuses across South Dakota has created
a myriad of opportunities for innovative and collaborative work. Faculty and
students from each campus work in partnership with clinical partners to craft
unique, evidence-based learning experiences that contribute to student success.
Virtual meetings between faculty and students allow for visual and verbal connectivity
that would otherwise not be possible.
The National League for Nursing is pleased to bestow upon the University of
South Dakota Department of Nursing — a school that can be held up as exemplary
— the continued privilege of designation as a Center of Excellence in
Nursing Education. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Debra Leners and her
colleagues on their third designation as an NLN Center of Excellence for Creating
Environments that Promote Student Learning and Professional Development.

Saint Xavier University

Saint Xavier University, founded in 1935, is the oldest comprehensive baccalaureate
program in Illinois. The School of Nursing in this co-educational, urban university
is grounded in the Mercy tradition, and with its many years of experience in
nursing education, links innovation and concern for community to graduate exemplary
nurses prepared to serve the global community.
The School of Nursing has created an environment that enhances student learning
and professional development through its commitment to the institutional mission
to “search for the truth, to think critically, to communicate effectively,
and to serve wisely and compassionately in support of human dignity and the
common good.” This environment is marked by a spirit of educational innovation
and supported by a strong, collective vision among faculty to meet the learning
needs of each student through a “Culture of Intentional Caring”.
Student-centered educational practices and an environment that nurtures excellence

dedicated to the academic success of every student, continually examine and
refine their teaching methodologies. They set high standards for their students,
yet provide an atmosphere that nurtures each student’s professional development.
Meaningful relationships that foster and facilitate learning are evident between
and among faculty and students.

Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing

It is with great pleasure that the National League for Nursing awards designation
as an NLN Center of Excellence to the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
This privately endowed institution in Baltimore, Maryland, and its baccalaureate,
master’s, PhD, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs are recognized
for excellence in educating nurses who set the highest standards for patient
care and become innovative national and international leaders.
Guided by the schools’ commitment to excellence, respect, diversity,
integrity, and accountability, faculty partner with students to design innovative,
personalized curricula. Active partners in their students’ success, faculty
provide experiences to develop professional values and socialize students to
new roles, professional involvement, commitment to lifelong learning, and creativity.
By focusing on pedagogies that foster collaboration, cultural competence, self-directed
learning, and problem-based learning, the school has developed innovative program
designs that help students across all programs develop knowledge and skills
for use in practice.
John Hopkins Nursing has a long history of collaboration, both formal and informal,
that nurtures the appetite for learning and the exchange of ideas. In this way,
the School of Nursing facilitates excellence in evidence-based practice, teaching,
and research. Faculty and students work together across all programs and disciplines
to ensure a rich, shared learning experience in which participants challenge
each other to deeper insights.

of Excellence designation for Creating Environments that Enhance Student Learning
& Professional Development to Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing. Join me
in offering our most sincere congratulations to Assistant Dean Joyce Griffin-Sobel
and the representatives from her school who are with us today.
Villanova University College of Nursing

Villanova University College of Nursing, a large, independent university located
in the suburbs of Philadelphia, enrolls more than 500 students in the undergraduate
program and approximately 250 students at the graduate and doctoral level. All
of the 46 full-time nurse faculty hold master’s degrees and 80 percent
hold doctoral degrees. All are in a unique position to engage students in pedagogical
projects and evidence-based education. Stemming from its commitment to conduct
and use pedagogical research, Villanova has a distinguished history of preparing
nurse educators who learn and apply theory to advance the science of nursing
education.
The University’s support for pedagogical research is evident in a number
of initiatives. The Center for Nursing Research coordinates faculty research
activities, fosters collaboration between students and faculty, and co-sponsors
an annual symposium focused on nursing research. Faculty completed a Visioning
Survey that identified a number of themes and led to a day-long workshop on
emerging trends in nursing education. These themes and trends have allowed faculty
to build on and advance the science of nursing education through a variety of
strategic activities, which have been incorporated into the curriculum.
Villanova is devoted to a unique approach to creativity and innovation that
advances nursing education and contributes to the development of the science
