Mobile Technology for Education and Practice: Exploring Innovative
Applications of the iTouch, iPad and Other Devices
Friday, October 29, 8:30 – 12:30 PM
Fairbanks Hall on the Indiana University Campus
Indianapolis, IN
DESCRIPTION
This program is designed to provide an overview of both established
and new mobile technologies (smart phones, iPod Touch, iPad,
traditional laptops) and how they might be applied for innovative
pedagogy. Topics to be covered include comparing/contrasting
mobile technologies, review of data storage/administration/security
in a mobile computing environment and an examination of discipline-specific
applications available on mobile devices. The content of the
program will be presented in both lecture and workshop format
as participants, working in small groups, will be asked to consider
new applications of these devices in a teaching and learning
context, and share those ideas with the larger group for consideration
and feedback. To help facilitate this discussion, participants
will also have “hands on” time with many of these
devices, so they might gain a better understanding of device-specific
functionality.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
- Describe the scope of mobile devices and
their functionality
- Discuss pedagogical benefits (and limitations) of mobile devices
- Understand device-specific data security/administration issues
- Locate discipline-specific applications available for mobile
devices
