Keynote “Narrative Pedagogy: More than Just Telling Stories”

In this session we will explore what Narrative Pedagogy is and why it is appropriate for nursing. We will also examine how Narrative Pedagogy is more than a teaching strategy, and what it has to offer nursing education. We will explore how attending to the Concernful Practices improve our teaching/learning environments.

2:15 – 3:00

Gathering students in ways that open up possibilities for teaching and learning

Participants will be invited to write a few sentences (no more than one paragraph) about what concerns them most about Narrative Pedagogy.
We will share the concerns we have about teaching in a different way, identify common concerns, and discuss how and why they are significant and meaningful to us as educators.

3:00- 3:15 Short Break
3:15- 4:00

Fostering Nurse Thinking - Interpreting a Student’s Story

In this session we will demonstrate how we can use stories to help students think like nurses. We will work together to interpret a student’s story from multiple perspectives, and practice identifying assumptions that are commonly made.

4:00-4:30

Plan for tomorrow. The Narrative Assignment - handout

We will discuss how to use the Narrative Assignment. Participants will be invited to write a 1 page story and bring it back tomorrow to be read aloud. The story will be about one of the following:

  1. Trying Something New or
  2. Holding on to Something Familiar

Presenters will read their own stories of “Trying Something New” as examples.

AUGUST 1, 2008 PROGRAM SCHEDULE
8:30-9:30

Interpreting students’ stories

In this session we will practice interpreting a story written by a new freshman nursing student, and one written by a senior nursing student.

9:30- 10:30

Interpreting participants’ stories

In this session we will practice interpreting participants’ stories of “Trying Something New” or “Holding on to Something Familiar.”

10:30- 10:45 Short Break
10:45 – 12:00

Non Narrative Assignments

In this session we will discuss how to create non narrative assignments that engage students and foster thinking. Handouts of Assignments will be provided.

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch
1:00 – 2:30 Small Group Work – Interpreting Stories as the Learner

In this session participants will be given the opportunity to interpret stories written by a student and a patient.
2:30 - 4:30

Small Group Work - Interpreting Stories as the Teacher

In this session participants will be given the opportunity to practice Narrative Pedagogy by leading a small group interpreting stories.
