Transforming Clinical Education: New Ways of Teaching Today’s
Nursing Students

DESCRIPTION This workshop will present innovative ways to teach nursing
students in a wide variety of settings. The presenter will discuss
issues that impact clinical teaching, as well as highlight national
initiatives that are influencing the need to radically change
clinical nursing education. Specific topics, for example, use
of portfolios and ways to infuse clinical judgment, will be explored.
The attendees will work in small groups apply clinical instruction
and evaluation methods to their own clinical learning environment.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Discuss the process of learning to
become a clinical teacher.
Describe characteristics of an effective clinical teacher.
Discuss legal aspects of clinical instruction and evaluation.
Identify changes in the workplace affecting clinical instruction.
Describe 4 national initiatives that are influencing the
need to change clinical instruction.
Explain what is meant by “nurses are knowledge workers”.
Discuss ways to teach students to think like a nurse.
Recognize ways a portfolio can be used
for evaluating clinical performance.
