The 2009 NLN Immersion in Evidence-Based
Nursing Education

The
2009 NLN Immersion in Evidence-based Nursing Education is an intensive
week-long event designed to communicate cutting-edged, evidenced
based thought in nursing education. It offers an in-depth opportunity
to develop and refine skills and insights that will help you evolve
as an educator and leader. It addresses all the Core Competencies
for Nurse Educators©. and provides an opportunity to build
excellence in your career and enhance your teaching and research
skills through one of the following areas of intensive study:
Intensive Study I: Building
Competence in Evidence-Based Teaching & Evaluation of Learning
selecting this area of
study will help you to:
- Formulate a personal plan to improve and
measure one’s effectiveness as a nurse educator, particularly
in relation to the use of evidence-based teaching/learning
and evaluation practices
- Analyze the relationships among learning
objectives, teaching/ learning experiences, best practices
of education, student characteristics, evaluation methods,
and intended and unintended outcomes
- Expand the theoretical and evidence-based
foundation one uses to design and effectively use a variety
of teaching/learning strategies
- Use available evidence to design innovative
teaching/learning strategies, particularly those that will
facilitate critical thinking and reflective judgment
- Appreciate that a multiplicity of evaluation
methods is needed to fully assess learners’ knowledge,
skills, and values
- Expand the theoretical and evidence-based
foundation one uses to design and effectively implement a
variety of methods to evaluate learner outcomes
- Design a student-centered learning experience
that enhances achievement of identified learning outcomes
and reflects available evidence
- Formulate a personal plan to improve and
measure one’s effectiveness as a nurse educator, particularly
in relation to the use of evidence-based teaching/learning
and evaluation practices
Intensive Study 2: Advancing
Competence in Evidence-Based Curriculum Development
Selecting this area of study will help you
to:
- Envision a preferred future for nursing
education and nursing curriculum development
- Identify faculty assumptions that influence
development of innovation in curriculum design.
- Discuss philosophical foundations of curriculum
development.
- Develop curriculum frameworks, outcomes
and competencies
- Describe the evaluation process and its
application to curriculum.
- Describe how to analyze curriculum evaluation
data for the purpose of continuous quality improvement.
- Discuss ways to bring about change in
curriculum
- Collaborate with team members to design
a curriculum development project related to issues experienced
within individual schools of nursing.
Intensive Study 3: Advancing
Scholarship and the Science of Nursing Education
Selecting this area of study will help you to:
- Examine the state of the science of nursing
education and issues related to its development
- Propose a scholarly project that enhances
nurse educators’ specialized knowledge and ability to
engage in evidence-based teaching practices
- Prepare a career plan in nursing education
- Use Boyer’s model to prepare a dossier
for tenure and/or promotion
- Evaluate diverse strategies for attaining
career outcomes
