Developing Web-Based Courses: A Hands-On Workshop
Description
Workshop participants will engage in hands-on practice in all
phases of web course development: exploring the functions of a learning management
system; learning to outline and flowchart a course; retrieving, editing, and
inserting images; using web course templates; and creating interactive exercises.
Novices to web development will be presented with strategies that can be applied
in many settings, from transforming PowerPoint modules for online delivery to
developing web-based courses from scratch. Teaching effectiveness and productivity
will be emphasized and good instructional design will be discussed.
Learner Level: Good file management skills in the Windows environment
required (finding files, navigating folders and directories; opening, copying,
re-naming files). Basic skills in Microsoft Office applications. Web page creation
experience is advantageous, but not required. Aptitude to learn new software
programs on a basic level.
Objectives:

Explain common terms used in web-Based learning
- Describe basic functions of learning management systems (LMS)
- Outline the basic steps in course development using an instructional design
process.

Outline/flowchart a basic course
- Storyboard two course pages
- Create at least two interactive exercises
- Relate different avenues for finding and acquiring media for use in web
courses, including pictures, audio, video, and animation
- Differentiate between two different image formats used on the web
- Describe tools and methods for course authoring, including:
- web editors
- course templates
- page templates
- Identify common target groups for pilot testing a web course
- Compress and upload course documents to a learning management system
