The Healthful Work Environment Tool Kit©
The NLN Task Group on Healthful Work Environments is proud to introduce
the Healthful Work Environment Tool Kit, an extension of the
work of the Task Group on Recruitment and Retention of Faculty
and an outgrowth of the 2003 NLN Faculty Role Satisfaction survey.
Incorporating the survey’s recommendations, the tool kit
comprises a series of questions and resources to be used by faculty
and nursing education administrators to assess the climate at their
schools. Insights gained from these assessments will be used to
create healthful work environments that support faculty in their
work, promote excellence and innovation, generate ideas for improving
the work environment, and contribute to the recruitment and retention
of faculty.
The HWE Tool Kit© can be used to: (a) engage faculty, administrators,
students, and staff in a dialogue about how to improve or create
a healthful work environment; and (b) design an action plan for
continuous quality improvement. From a recruitment and retention
standpoint, the assessment questions may be used by search committees
as points to address with potential faculty members, by candidates
interviewing for or seeking information about a faculty position,
and by administrators to measure faculty satisfaction.

two weeks of receipt. Use of the tool kit for nursing education
research or for duplication by NLN member schools and NLN members
usually are approved at no cost. Non-member schools, individuals
and organizations or publishers wishing to reproduce the tool kit
in books or electronic media will be charged a fee for copyright
permission based on intended use. Each individual submitting a
copyright request will receive a written response, including citation
requirements and an invoice (when a copyright permission fee is
required). The fee must be paid in full before the electronic version
