Background:
One of the goals of NLN’s Nursing Education Advisory Council (NEAC) is to promote strategies that facilitate the continuous quality improvement of all nursing education programs. Focusing on excellence certainly is congruent with this charge. During 2001-2003, the NEAC Executive Committee and its Task Groups formulated a number of programs that were designed to promote excellence in nursing education. Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education were developed, guidelines to achieve greater success in the recruitment and retention of a highly qualified diverse student body were crafted, a model for enhanced articulation and mobility along the entire continuum of educational preparation was designed, and a Centers of Excellence in Nursing Education program was launched. We are now faced with the challenge of implementing these hallmarks, guidelines, models and programs, all in an effort to achieve excellence.
Purpose of the Task Group:
The purpose of this Task Group is to evaluate the NLN Centers of Excellence program and promote excellence in all of nursing education.
Specific Tasks to be Completed:
- Promote the NLN Centers of Excellence program in all types of nursing programs
- Evaluate the first “cycle” of the Centers of Excellence program and suggest revisions based on that evaluation
- Propose strategies that will promote the factors that enhance the achievement of excellence in practical nurse, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs
- Propose strategies that will eliminate the barriers to achieving excellence in practical nurse, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs
- Design an evaluation study to assess the impact of the NLN Centers of Excellence program on reform in nursing education
- Add information about excellence, excellence in education, and excellence in nursing education to the literature database
- Establish and monitor an electronic “community” on the topic of excellence in nursing education
