National League for Nursing - Get Invovled Task Groups/Task Force

Purpose of the Task Group:

The purpose of the Joint NLN/NLNAC Task Force on Creating a Global Nursing Education Community is to provide leadership in bringing together the community of nurse educators from around the world to address and influence issues related to quality nursing education, the preparation and ongoing development of faculty, and advancement of the science of nursing education.

Structure:

This 10-member Task Force is comprised of 5 individuals recommended by the NLN and 5 individuals recommended by the NLNAC. Each member is a member of the NLN and teaches in or is affiliated with an NLNAC-accredited program, and all have a sincere interest and some degree of expertise in global nursing education.

Among the 10 members of the Task Force, all of the following qualifications are represented:

  • Individuals who are knowledgeable about and committed to the mission and goals of the NLN and the NLNAC
  • Individuals with formalized “connections” to schools or education-focused organizations in various countries/regions of the world
  • Individuals with personal experience working with nursing education systems outside the US
  • Individuals who received their basic or graduate nursing education outside the US
  • Individuals who are diverse in their gender, ethnicity, race, background, perspectives, and passions

In addition to these 10 members, individuals who can contribute actively to discussions and help the Task Force meet its goals will be invited to participate or serve as informal consultants to the group. Such individuals may include members of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), representatives of the International Congress of Nursing (ICN), individual involved with WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Centers, and so on.

Task Force Activities:

The Task Force met for the first time in February 2005. Since that time, an online survey was sent to deans/director/chairpersons, asking for basic information about their global or international activities. A more thorough survey will be posted in December 2005 to gather more detailed information about global initiatives, faculty and student exchanges, and faculty interactions with educators in other countries regarding teaching and research. In addition, representatives of the group facilitated a discussion session at the NLN’s Education Summit (September 2005, in Baltimore) where they talked with faculty and nursing education leaders about current and future strategies to create and sustain a global nursing education community. Future activities of the Task Force will include analysis and reporting of survey findings, identifying nursing education leaders in various countries throughout the world, serving as a resource to NLNAC as they strategically pursue accreditation of programs outside the US, serving as a resource to NLN as they design programs and other initiatives related to faculty development and nursing education research globally, providing globally-relevant input to the nursing education repository being developed by the NLN.
