Task Groups/Task Force

Background:

Nursing education has been a leader in the use of instructional technologies to promote learning and enhance teaching. For many years, nursing education has used computer-assisted instruction and interactive videodisks in all types of programs. In the last decade, there has been an increase in the use of new instructional technologies including human simulators, web-based learning, virtual reality and PDAs. In a recent issue of EDUCAUSE Review (September/October, 2004), new tools for back-to-school include blogs, swarms, wikis and games.

Despite the widespread use of many of these instructional technologies, the evidence to support their effectiveness in learning is lacking. There is a need to document the impact of these instructional technologies on the teaching and learning process as well as on educational outcomes so that best practices in teaching and learning with instructional technologies and the innovative use of these technologies in nursing curriculum can be formulated.

Purpose of the Task Group:

This Task Group will promote the effective use of educational/ instructional technology as a teaching tool, particularly in light of the complex demands of online learning environments.

Specific Tasks to be Completed:

  1. Update the review of evidence-based literature, including benchmarking studies, related to the effective use of instructional technologies in nursing education. Add this information to the NLN data repository.
  2. Review the evidence to establish best practices for specific instructional technologies.
  3. Disseminate best practices in use of instructional technologies to the nursing education community via articles, presentations, Living Book chapters, etc.
  4. Establish and monitor an electronic “communities” on the topic(s) related to use of instructional technologies.
