Task Groups/Task Force

Background:

There is a critical need for creative and futuristic thinking in nursing education. The need is more urgent today because of the increasing shortage of nurses in the total workforce, and the critical lack of nurse educators to educate nurses for the future. The high cost of nursing programs in this time of increasing budget cuts, and the lack of innovation and research on the scholarship of teaching also are factors that need to be addressed if we are to move nursing education and the entire profession forward.

Purpose of the Task Group:

This Task Group will be expected to develop a comprehensive plan to guide NLN efforts aimed at developing a cadre of leaders in nursing education.

Specific Tasks to be Completed:

  1. Define and differentiate leadership skills and management skills, particularly in the academic arena.
  2. Solicit three manuscripts per year on the topic of leadership for Nursing Education Perspectives.
  3. Solicit two Living Book chapters per year on the topic of leadership.
  4. Offer one pre-conference session on leadership at the Summit each year.
  5. Develop a conference devoted to leadership in nursing education by 2006 that will become an annual conference or institute.
  6. Develop a business plan that would support the creation of a fellowship and/or internship program, funded through the NLN Foundation. This program would provide a mentored experience for nurse educators who wish to become leaders in shaping the future of nursing education. The experience could involve spending time at NLN headquarters with senior management team, time in Washington with the NLN lobbyist, and other experiences tailored to the goals of the fellow/intern. The plan should include specifics of the program, such as budget, eligibility criteria and outcomes, and proposal requirements for fellowship applicants, as well as a plan for evaluation of the program.
  7. Explore ways to recognize excellence in nursing education leadership.
  8. Establish and monitor one or more e-community discussion areas on the NLN website for dialogue on nursing education leadership.
  9. Contribute new articles and resources on the topic of nursing education leadership to the NLN data repository.
