Background:
A Nursing Education Minimum Data Set (NEMDS) will improve the quality of nursing education research by ensuring (a) commonality of language across studies and (b) that all nursing education research includes a common core of information. This “common core” (the NEMDS) will allow for the aggregation of data across settings, facilitate interpretation and comparison of findings across studies, and provide guidelines to researchers about elements to collect in the research process. The use of minimum data sets in nursing practice (e.g., NANDA, NIC, NOC) and in nursing administration (NMMDS) have been shown to be quite valuable in advancing knowledge. Similar models must now be developed for nursing education if we are to advance the development of that science.
Purpose of the Task Group:
The purpose of this Task Group is to create the NEMDS and disseminate it to the community of nursing education scholars.
Specific Tasks to be Completed:
- Conduct an extensive review of published and fugitive literature regarding minimum data sets, standard languages, and variables reported in nursing education research studies
- Investigate the current state of the art regarding the development and use of Minimum Data Sets (MDSs)
- Examine models that others have used for creating minimum data sets in health care, education, administration, or other fields
- Conduct focus groups with educators in and outside nursing, legislators, and other stakeholders to determine what data they want about nursing education, when they want it, and how they plan to use it
- Conduct Delphi studies to identify terms, definitions, and MDS elements
- Develop the vocabulary, nomenclature, codes, classifications, database terms and concepts, and overall conceptual framework/model for the NEMDS
- Create the NEMDS
- Pilot test the NEMDS and revise it as needed based on results of that pilot study
- Formulate plans to disseminate the NEMDS to nursing educator scholars, graduate students preparing for the educator role, and other relevant stakeholders
