Task Groups/Task Force

Background:

Researchers are well aware of the cost involved in conducting studies that are of the highest quality. While there are extensive funds available to support clinical research, very little federal or private funding is available to support pedagogical research. In fact, the National League for Nursing, alone and in collaboration with strategic allies, is one of the largest and most common sources of funding for nursing education research. Yet these funds are, of necessity, limited. If nursing education scholars are to make significant progress in developing the science of nursing education, funds must be available to support such research efforts, including large-scale, multi-site, multi-method studies.

Purpose of the Task Group:

The purpose of this Task Group is to develop strategies to promote the availability and use of funds to support nursing education research and the development of the science of nursing education.

Specific Tasks to be Completed:

  1. Conduct a thorough analysis of public sources of funds available to support educational research
  2. Conduct a thorough analysis of private sources of funds available to support educational research
  3. Survey nursing education researchers for sources of funds used to support their studies
  4. Prepare a compendium of information about public and private funds available to support nursing education research
  5. Disseminate this compendium to the nursing education community
  6. Develop a mechanism to regularly update this compendium
  7. Develop a mechanism to regularly obtain information from nursing education researchers about funding of their studies, and disseminate this information to various communities of interest
  8. Collaborate with the NLN Public Policy Committee and the Trustees of the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education to develop strategies that will restore Federal funding and increase the amount of funds available from other sources to support nursing education research that will develop the science of nursing education
  9. Review to reaffirm or revise the NLN’s Position Statement on Funding for Nursing Education Research, and ensure the wide dissemination of that Statement
