Academy Established by the National League for Nursing Recognizes Contributions of Nurse Educators to Excellence in Nursing Education

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY — June 5, 2009 — The National League for Nursing will induct its third class of 21 fellows, representing 20 schools of nursing throughout the United States into the Academy of Nursing Education, the League announced today. They join the 65 fellows, who, since the academy's establishment in 2007, have proudly borne the credential ANEF.

Selection is competitive, with applications reviewed by a panel of fellows that makes its recommendation to the NLN Board of Governors, the oversight body for the academy. Evaluations take into account applicants' contributions to innovative teaching and/or learning strategies; nursing education research; faculty development; academic leadership; promotion of public policy that advances nursing education; and/or collaborative educational, practice or community partnerships.

Fellows are chosen for their sustained and significant contributions to the field of nursing education, noted board president Elaine Tagliareni, EdD, RN, CNE. "We are proud of the visionary leadership these fellows represent. They serve as important role models to anyone aspiring to make a difference in nursing education, and ultimately to the delivery of health care in the United States," she asserted.

The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of outstanding nurse educators. Fellows support the mission of the NLN to promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce. They assist in the work required to prepare graduates from all types of nursing programs and serve as resources for new educators and those in clinical practice who hope to someday enter the ranks of nursing faculty.

Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, "The National League for Nursing relies on these accomplished individuals as allies in our efforts to increase the numbers of excellent nurse educators needed to tackle the shortage of nurses plaguing America's health care institutions. Nurse faculty and colleagues from other fields who contribute to excellence in nursing education and to the preparation of a diverse nursing workforce that meets the needs of the complex 21st-century health care environment deserve this public recognition."

The induction of new fellows and a meeting of fellows in the Academy of Nursing Education will be held in conjunction with the NLN's annual Education Summit, September 23-26 in Philadelphia, PA.
