Exciting Faculty Development Opportunity to Assist Nurse Educators Prepare Research for Publication

October 26, 2007 — New York, NY — Full-time faculty members at schools of nursing who have recently done data collection, implemented an innovative approach in nursing education, or completed a search of the literature on a nursing education topic, but have not had the time to craft the information into an article for publication are certain to benefit from this workshop, conceived and organized by the NLN and the NLN Foundation. Co-sponsored by the University of Connecticut, the NLN Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at the Nathan Hale Inn & Conference Center in Storrs, Friday-Sunday, April 4-6.

Explained NLN CEO Dr. Beverly Malone, “We’ve designed this intimate writing program to help nurse educator-scholars polish writing skills and organize research findings for publication in scholarly journals. By the end of the retreat, each participant should have a paper ready for submission to a scholarly journal.”

The retreat will be led by Marilyn H. Oermann, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and academic division III chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Dr. Oermann has contributed to nursing education through her many books and articles that guide faculty practice. Her books include Writing for Publication in Nursing, Evaluation and Testing in Nursing Education, and Clinical Teaching Strategies in Nursing. Adding her expertise will be Leslie Block, managing editor of Nursing Education Perspectives, the NLN’s respected peer-reviewed journal.

Due to the nature of the program, space is limited; participants will be chosen through a competitive application process. To be eligible, applicants must be currently serving as full-time faculty at a school of nursing and must be members of the NLN, either as individual members or through their school’s agency membership.

Applicants must submit a completed application form that includes the purpose, target audience, key data to be evidenced, and the NLN’s Core Competencies of Nurse Educators© that will be addressed, along with a personal statement describing the applicant’s interest in participating in this retreat and her or his greatest challenge in scholarly writing. Because the NLN is actively seeking ways to advance diversity, applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and/or papers that address diversity in nursing education in some manner are encouraged.

Applications may be downloaded at www.nlnfoundation.org. The deadline for submission is January 15, 2008, applicants will be notified of their selection by February 15, 2008.

The program will begin at noon on Friday and end by 3:00 pm on Sunday. Group and individual sessions will be scheduled throughout the retreat and time and privacy will be available for writing. Transportation will be provided between Bradley International Airport and the Nathan Hale Inn and Conference center on Friday and Sunday. A registration fee of $750, due by March 15, 2008, includes tuition, two-night hotel accommodation, all meals and airport transfers.
