OVERVIEW
In 1998-1999, the NLN’s Council of Associate Degree Nursing,
with support from the National Organization of Associate Degree
Nursing, worked to outline a list of competencies of graduates of
associate degree programs that reflected today’s health care
system. It is the hope of those who developed this document that
it will provide guidelines for associate degree nursing educators
as they develop and revise curricula that prepare graduates to
function
in new and expanded roles.
This booklet outlines trends in education, health care, and nursing
practice; assumptions about nursing practice and nursing education;
and the organizing framework within which the competencies were
developed. Eight core competencies are described, and outcome behaviors
related to each of them are provided. Finally, significant terms
are defined in the Glossary, and references that served as the foundation
for the document are provided.
