OVERVIEW
Achieving Excellence in Nursing Education, has been edited by Marsha H. Adams, DSN, RN, CNE and Theresa M. Valiga, EdD, RN, FAAN. It continues the NLN's long tradition of championing excellence in nursing education "by articulating the scope of NLN's vision for excellence in all types of nursing programs and the ways in which nursing educators can strategically coordinate their efforts to achieve excellence in their teaching practice and in their schools," Dr. Pamela M. Ironside, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF and associate professor and director of the Center for Research in Nursing Education at Indiana University School of Nursing, wrote in her foreward.
The book is structured around the NLN's Excellence in Nursing Education Model© and Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education©, both developed to guide faculty and administrators in a quest for excellence, which demands the creation and implementation of "transformative strategies with daring ingenuity," according to the definition of excellence listed among the core values on the NLN website. To achieve excellence, the NLN encourages schools of nursing to cultivate "a culture…[reflecting] a commitment to continuous growth, improvement, and understanding…where transformation is embraced and the status quo and mediocrity are not tolerated," a point echoed by the editors in their introduction.
