National League for Nursing - Excellence Initiatives
2009-2012 Centers of Excellence Designees
The Brookdale Community College Nursing Program is an
established associate degree program in northern New Jersey
that has been in existence since the late sixties. Engaged in self-reflection
and lifelong learning, faculty are committed to the improvement of student success.
They consider themselves “expert learners” whose collective trust
and collaboration have empowered them to create a paradigm shift in their beliefs
about teaching and learning. Through mutual sharing and supportive teamwork,
and the embrace of a narrative inquiry approach to their role, they have succeeded
in facilitating student-centered learning and handing down their expertise,
traditions, values, and knowledge to future generations of nurses.
The narrative inquiry approach to nursing education is focused on the reflection
of lived experiences of both faculty and students as explicated in their stories
and in the faculty’s ability to weave together narrative, theory, and
evidence-based practice. It gives contour to life experience. The use of collaboration,
learner centeredness, story sharing, and reflective thinking focuses students
on their patients’ unique stories in relation to their own professional
journeys. This affective “high touch” component of narrative pedagogy
balances the technology-rich learning environment in the Brookdale nursing curriculum.
The faculty at Brookdale Community demonstrate an enthusiastic commitment to
a collective vision of excellence and have excelled in incorporating narrative
pedagogy into not only the curriculum, but also the development of faculty.
It is with great pleasure that the National League for Nursing awards the Centers
of Excellence designation for Creating Environments that Promote the Pedagogical
Expertise of Faculty to Brookdale Community College.
