  • Identification of the Problem

We frequently use standardized patients in our simulated clinical scenarios, but we can’t insert an actual IV catheter due to the risk to our volunteers. However, it is beneficial for student learning to assess and flush an IV site as well as hang IV fluids during a simulated clinical experience.
  • Unique Idea

We have created a two part system with both a realistic looking IV insertion site as well as a functioning injection port that is secured to the drain line with an anti-stick needle connector.
  • Objectives

    • Students will assess and flush the mock IV site as well as hang IV fluids during the simulated clinical experience.
    • Standardized patient volunteers will not be harmed.
  • Supplies/Ingredients

    1. IV catheter
    2. Scissors
    3. 2 IV extension sets
    4. 1 injection port
    5. Clear IV site dressing
    6. Tape
    7. Gravity IV tubing
    8. Empty IV bag
  • Steps to Creating the Solution

Create a realistic IV insertion site:

    1. Discard the IV needle and clip the catheter to ¼ inch.
    2. Attach the IV catheter to the first IV extension set and clip off the luer lock connector.
    3. Use the clear IV site dressing to secure the catheter and first extension set to the standardized patient’s arm at a place where he has an obvious vein.
    4. Create a functioning injection port with a secure, water tight drainage system:
    5. Attach the gravity IV tubing to the empty IV bag.
    6. Attach the anti-stick needle connector to the end of the gravity tubing. Remove the protective cap. Use this plastic spike to connect to the luer lock end of the second IV extension tubing. Snug them together tightly so that you will have a secure and water tight connection.
    7. Attach the injection port to the opposite end of the second IV extension set.
    8. Place this extension set on the patient’s arm so that it curves in the opposite direction as the first and creates a loop. Secure with tape.
    9. Cover the drain line with linens and place the drain bag on the floor.
