NLN's Pre-NCLEX® Readiness Tests serve as practice exams and review for the NCLEX®. Three different end of nursing program exams—Diagnostic Readiness Test, Comprehensive Nursing Achievement, and Critical Thinking tests—are complementary to one another, and help students prepare for nursing practice and to pass NCLEX.

DIAGNOSTIC READINESS TEST (DRT) FOR RN LICENSURE

Test Specification (PDF)

Purpose: Evaluates the abilities and skills required for entry-level nursing practice as measured by NCLEX-RN®.

Format: 172-item, four-option, multiple-choice.

Administration: Can be administered in three hours. Schedule at the completion of the nursing program. The NLN DRT is nonsecure and therefore may be ordered by educators and nurse candidates.

Test booklets do not need to be returned and can be used for further study and remediation.

Scoring: Performance reports for the DRT provide diagnostic information in the areas of client needs, the nursing process, clinical practice, and health alterations. The detailed, individual performance profile uses a graph to indicate strengths and weaknesses on 26 subscales related to those four areas. This report can be used to create an individualized study plan. A statement about the likelihood of success on NCLEX-RN® is included based on the total score earned. Class summary reports display numerical scores with indicators of overall student strengths and weaknesses. The report provides educators with the names of students who demonstrated relative weakness in each content area, and can help educators to devise an effective group study plan. Correct answer rationales to every item and a reference list are provided.

Online users receive immediate feedback of individual and class test results.

For those who purchase the paper version, two copies of each individual diagnostic profile are provided, one for the examinee and one for faculty analysis. A class summary report for the group is furnished when 10 or more students are tested.

ALTERNATE-ITEM RN PRACTICE EXAMINATION (ONLINE)

Purpose: Self-study test allows students who are graduating from registered nursing programs to practice answering alternate-type questions similar to those that are being added to the NCLEX-RN® test pool. Includes items on adult, women's, child, and mental health topics. Intended as an accompaniment to NLN RN Pre-NCLEX® Readiness Exams.

Format: 25-item, alternate-type items that include "hot spots," short answer, and multiple answer formats.

Administration: This exam is not timed, and can be completed in forty-five minutes. Schedule in final semester along with an NLN RN Pre-NCLEX® Readiness Exam (RN DRT and Comprehensive Nursing Achievement Exam).

Scoring: Test report is available immediately following completion of the online test. Includes a raw score and four subscores, plus rationales for correct answers.
