Identification of the Problem
Stool was needed for a demo on how to take a stool sample for fecal, occult blood (formed logs or loosed stool). It will be later used for a geriatric simulation involving a manikin being left on the bedpan that will need to be cleaned up (looser stool).
Unique Idea
The stimulated stool is a cost-effective way to add realism into simulation. The stool will be a great addition to introduce first semester nursing students to the patient care that they will encounter. The stool may also be used for students to identify the levels on a Bristol stool chart.
Objectives
The learner will be able to:
- Evaluate characteristics of stool as it relates to the simulation scenario
- Differentiate stool sample consistencies
- Develop a plan of care related to complications of fecal consistencies
Supplies/Ingredients
- chocolate, instant pudding mix (3.9oz)
- unsweetened apple sauce (3.9oz)
- corn (optional)
- peanuts (optional)
- simulated stool scent (optional)
- mixing container
- spoon or mixing utensil
- bedpan or desired container
Steps to Creating the Solution
For a soft, unformed stool:
- Combine 7 tsp of apple sauce and 7 tsp of instant pudding mix. Mix together until well combined.
For a more formed, log:
- Combine 7 tsp of apple sauce with 7 Tbsp of instant pudding mix. Mix together until well combined (makes roughly 1/2 cup of simulated stool). May add optional nuts, corn, and/or simulated stool scent.
- Divide into desired size logs.
- Place in bedpan or other desired receptacle/location.
