Identification of the Problem

Our students participate in a simulated clinical experience for Code Blue. Currently, the students place, but do not connect, actual defibrillation pads during the Code Blue simulation. These are quite expensive and leave an adhesive residue that is difficult to remove from the human patient simulators. We re-use them as much as possible, but they last for only a few groups, which is cost prohibitive for a large cohort of students.

Unique Idea

I have created simulated pads with inexpensive materials from the local arts and crafts store and a visual that directs placement of the pads. They cost less than $1 per pair, and the adhesive is milder.

  1. Adhesive Craft Foam Sheets
  2. Plastic Lacing
  3. Ruler
  4. Scissors
  5. Heavyweight plastic sheet protector
  6. Printed visual aid that directs placement of pads

Steps to Creating the Solution

  1. Create a visual aid that directs placement of the pads. Print and place in a heavyweight plastic sheet protector.
  2. Cut two 4” x 6” rectangles of adhesive craft foam to simulate the pads. (You may be able to find these pre-cut at the craft store). On the back of each pad, cut a slit in the backing so that it will be easy to peel off during the simulated clinical experience.
  3. Cut two 1.5” x 1” rectangles from adhesive craft foam, and then cut a notch out of one end of each rectangle to simulate a plug.
  4. Cut one 36" piece of plastic lacing to simulate the wiring
  5. Fold the lacing in half and secure the folded end to the plug by sandwiching between the small foam pieces with backing removed.
  6. Cut two ¾” x 1” rectangles of adhesive craft foam. Peel the backing and use these to secure one loose end of the lacing to the front of each pad.
  7. Place the completed pads into the plastic sheet protector along with the visual aid. They are ready for use!
