Identification of the Problem

The clay wound care models were created due to a lack of resources in the Virtual Learning Lab at Olivet Nazarene University ABSN program. Nursing students learning the skill of wound care are able to use the clay wound model for practicing wound dressings using any supplies without damaging manikin composition. The wound models are easily transportable for use sitting at a desk or table.

Unique Idea

Wound care is an everyday nursing task, and using models which are portable, resistant to all solutions, easy to store, simple to clean, and extremely affordable and simple to reproduce provides a great solution for providing students with this essential skill practice. The portable wound models can be fashioned from simple modeling clay in various colors to represent various types of pressure ulcers at all stages. Eschar, slough, granulation tissue, and maceration can be added using the appropriate colors of clay. Undermining and tunneling can also be added for realistic effects. The modeling clay is easy to work with and the plastic containers maintain and protect the model from damage and dryness. Students can stage, measure, and dress these wounds.

Supplies/Ingredients

  1. Modeling clay colors: skin tone of choice, red, black, brown, yellow, white
  2. Round plastic food storage containers with lids

Steps to Creating the Solution

Fashion the flesh colored clay around the edge of the plastic cover. The inner portion of the cover, which is recessed, provides a good depth for creating the wound bed.
