Identification of the Problem

We needed a realistic way of producing pink, frothy sputum in a standardized participant who was experiencing acute pulmonary edema from an exacerbation of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF).

Unique Idea

The formula described below was orally dissolved by the standardized participant on cue to produce realistic, pink, frothy sputum.

Objectives

Produce a low-cost, realistic representation of pink, frothy sputum for use with a standardized participant (SP)

Supplies/Ingredients

  1. Pink or red, powdered drink mix
  2. Effervescent, antacid tablets (broken into 1/4 pieces)
  3. Emesis basin for expulsion of product
  4. Small, resealable plastic bags or plastic med cups (if making in advance, use an airtight, plastic bag for storage)
  5. Caution: Check for any food/drug allergies in SP before proceeding.

Steps to Creating the Solution

  1. Each simulation trial requiring this product will need a small, pre-made packet of this product as follows: ¼ Effervescent, antacid tablet ½ teaspoon of powdered drink mix. Place these 2 ingredients in med cup or plastic bag to pass to the SP on cue.
  2. When cued, the SP will place the formula in the oral cavity, allow it to dissolve and then let it run out of the mouth (Caution: Some drink mix colors may stain clothing)
  3. Utilize emesis basin when the SP needs to expel sputum
