In the final scenario Mia’s grandmother brings her to the Emergency Department after a fall from the monkey bars in the park. Mia's mouth is bleeding and her tooth is pushed up into the socket.
Katrina’s Introductory Monologue
Katrina reveals that she dropped out of high-school at the age of 16 to help support her parents and siblings. She lives with Mia’s father, Mike. Katrina works at a coffee shop a short distance from her inner-city apartment. Katrina’s parents live nearby and they care for Mia during the day and overnight when she or Mike work evening/night shifts. The family does not have health insurance from their employer, so rely on government assisted health care.
Simulation Scenario 1 takes place when Katrina brings Mia to the clinic for her check-up and immunizations. Katrina is concerned that formerly happy Mia has become cranky, doesn’t eat or sleep well, and has gained very little weight this year. An oral examination reveals that she has dark brown teeth.
Mia was referred to a dentist who diagnosed severe dental caries requiring extractions and tooth restorations under general anesthesia. In this scenario, Mia’s has just returned from surgery.
Simulation Scenario 3 occurs when Mia’s grandmother brings her to the emergency department following a fall from the monkey bars. Her front tooth is wiggly and gum is bleeding.
