Identification of the Problem

It is difficult to clean manikin bladders after simulated urine containing sediment is used.

Unique Idea

A plastic food storage container placed between a manikin's legs can be used instead of a manikin bladder when learners need to practice collecting urine from a patient with urosepsis. A catheter can be attached to the manikin and learners can clamp tubing and practice drawing from the port.

Objectives

Demonstrate proper collection of contaminated urine from a foley catheter.

Supplies/Ingredients

  1. plastic food storage container with lid, approximately one quart size
  2. bowl to mix simulated urine
  3. sugar-free drink to be used for coloring
  4. yellow food coloring
  5. baby powder or other powders to give the simulated urine a sediment look
  6. duct tape
  7. complete foley catheter
  8. 10 ml luer lock syringe
  9. alcohol wipes
  10. Optional: brown coloring could be added to simulate sepsis

Steps to Creating Solution

  1. Create a small hole in the side of the plastic food storage container. Alternatively, a small hole can be created in the plastic food storage container lid, but the catheter may get stuck.
  2. Thread the catheter through the hole and attach it to the bottom of the container with duct tape.
  3. Mix the urine solution in a bowl.  Use sugar-free beverage, water, baby powder (for the thicker look), and yellow food coloring. Brown food coloring may be added for a darker urine solution.
  4. Pour the urine solution in the plastic food storage container with catheter tip.
  5. Replace the container lid.
  6. Place the container between manikin legs. Alternatively, a task trainer could be used.  Attach and secure the catheter to the manikin leg.
  7. Hang bag off the side of the bed.
  8. Ask learners to clamp the clear foley tubing attached to the bag to collect a specimen.
  9. Clean port on top of catheter tubing with alcohol wipe.
  10. Use a 10ml luer lock syringe to the appropriate specimen collection site, port by catheter.  Draw out specimen. Learners can place specimen in a collection cup.
