National League for Nursing - Nursing Education Research
Research activities advance the NLN's goal of taking the "lead
in the conduct of research that informs and promotes evidence-based teaching,
advances the science of nursing education, and provides and interprets data
about nursing education and the nurse educator workforce." The NLN participates
in grant programs, conducts public policy and pedogogical research surveys,
and produces a variety of publications.
Grants Programs Supported by the NLN
The NLN Nursing Education Research Grants
The NLN Nursing Education
Research Grants Program awards approximately six to eight grants annually
to NLN individual members, and faculty and students of NLN member schools.
Guidelines for the 2010 Grants Program will be posted in September 2009 with
a due date of February 17, 2010.
The Sigma Theta Tau International/NLN Grant
The NLN Foundation for Nursing Education and Sigma Theta Tau International
are pleased to announce this grant to support research that advances the science
of nursing education. Made possible through an individual donor gift, the
grant will be used to advance the science of nursing education through the
use of technology in the dissemination of knowledge.
Eligible candidates will hold a master's or doctoral degree and be a registered
nurse. The application process is open to the public but preference will be
given to Sigma Theta Tau International and National League for Nursing members.

The NLN Survey Research Program
The NLN's survey research program is designed to collect vital statistics
on the nurse educator workforce, the nursing student population, and nursing
education pedagogies. Each of our annual and biannual surveys illuminates
a component of the teaching-learning environment and contributes to our overall
understanding of the changing topography of nursing education.
Among the NLN's studies, a survey focuses on a current issue of import to US
health care generally, and to nurse faculty, nursing and/or nursing education
specifically. The 2006-2007 survey, the NLN/Carnegie National Survey of Nurse
Educators on the topics of compensation, workload, and teaching practice, is
yielding very exciting findings.
In addition, the NLN's Annual Survey of Schools of Nursing produces
key educational statistics from all American nursing programs. For more than
50 years this study has been an essential source of trend data on the country's
nursing student population, serving educators, researchers, policy makers, and
all others who monitor trends in the size and characteristics of the nursing
workforce pipeline. The Nurse Faculty Census generates key statistics on the
nation's nurse faculty population, monitoring trends in faculty demographics,
salaries, and vacancies. The Annual Survey of State Boards of Nursing produces
a comprehensive database of state-approved schools of nursing in the United
States.
NLN Data
NLN data are disseminated through a number of reports. With the NLN
Data View™ you can search for and download graphs in various formats
that cast a wide lens on all types of pre-licensure nursing programs, including
the 1000-plus programs offering diploma and associate nursing degrees. The graphs
illustrate essential data about applications, admissions, enrollment, retention,
and graduation rates; and provide a comprehensive demographic profile of the
current student population documenting ethnic-racial identity, gender, and age.
In addition, findings from NLN studies can be found in reports such as The
Scope of Practice for Academic Nurse Educators and the Laerdal Summary
Report.
