Simulation Design Template
Revised February 2023.
Looking for an easy-to-use simulation design template? The NLN Simulation Design Template is available for use, provided that the SIRC information remains intact in the footer.

NLN Guide for Teaching Thinking
This guide offers structured, guided questions designed to support learner thinking based on context, content, and course objectives.
NLN Sim Leader Projects
Healthcare Simulation Prework Form
Prework assignments help learners prepare both cognitively and emotionally for simulation-based activities. By aligning with scenario objectives, prework strengthens clinical judgment, supports psychological safety, and ensures participants enter the simulation with the background, knowledge, and readiness needed to fully engage. The student and faculty forms below can be used to assign and structure this preparation.

ACE.S Unfolding Cases Mapped to the AACN Essentials
An Essentials Mapping Tool template was created for educators to map their own simulation scenario objectives to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing domains and competencies. An exemplar is provided of a completed tool that maps the objectives of the NLN Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACE.S) unfolding cases to the Essentials
Project Disclaimer: Simulation leadership projects are a requirement for the Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators. All projects are then placed within SIRC for the benefit of the nursing education community. Inclusion of this specific project does not constitute an endorsement by the NLN of the AACN Essentials.

RNovating the Classroom
The purpose of this toolkit is to serve as a resource guide for didactic or lecture faculty to plan, develop, and implement simulation strategies in the classroom of pre-licensure nursing courses.
Social Determinants of Health crosswalk (SDOH-C)
The Social Determinants of Health crosswalk (SDOH-C) is designed to emphasize the critical importance of integrating SDOH into simulation curricula. It provides a systematic approach for higher education institutions to assess current SDOH integration and identify opportunities for further inclusion. By leveraging simulation experiences, faculty can purposefully introduce and reinforce SDOH concepts, fostering more socially responsive nursing education.

Operationalizing Extended Reality Toolkit
Three members of the 2022 cohort of the Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educator developed toolkit that defines and operationalizes types of extended reality. This toolkit is intended to be used as the foundation for the development of XR into a nursing program in the professional or educational setting.
Mindfulness in Prebriefing
Four members of the 2017 cohort researched the use of mindfulness with nursing students at various levels within prebriefing in simulation. Usefulness, resources, and recommendations are described in the document.
Pre-briefing Checklist
Four members of the 2018 cohort of the Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators searched the literature on this topic, created a checklist and established preliminary content validity.

Multi-patient Simulation Template and Toolkit
Four members of the 2015 cohort of the Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators created a template for multi-patient simulations (MPS).

Simulation Design Template Adapted for IPE Simulations
Using the IPEC Core Competencies, five members of the 2013 cohort of the Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators embedded IPE objectives and guided reflection questions into the template and tested them at five schools across the country.
Leveling Simulations: Integrating QSEN and ACE.S
These supplemental materials correlate to "Integrating QSEN and ACES: An NLN Simulation Leader Initiative,” published in Nursing Education Perspectives, Volume 33, No. 3, May/June 2012. The authors incorporated QSEN competencies into the "Millie” unfolding case study that was developed for the NLN's Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACE.S) project. Tables that correlate the KSAs for each QSEN competency with the learning activities suggested in each scenario are provided, along with enhanced simulation templates for the three scenarios.
