The Development of Competencies and Task Statements for the Practical Nurse/Vocational Nurse Educator Role

The presentation will review the processes and procedures undertaken by an NLN Task Group charged with potential development of practical nursing/vocational nursing educators. The results and implications of the task statements will be discussed. A Q&A session via chat box will conclude the presentation.

Objectives
  • Describe the processes and procedures of the development of the PN/VN nurse educator competencies and task statements. 

  • Correlate the task statements with nurse educator tasks, duties, and responsibilities.

Speaker
Larry Simmons
PhD, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, CGNC, ICE-CCP, FAAN
Larry Simmons has more than 25 years of experience in nursing education. His current expertise includes certifications, test construction and test item writing, curriculum issues, and ongoing faculty development and is a nationally recognized speaker. He also holds certification as a certification professional by the Institute for Certification Excellence. Larry has been Senior Director and then Director of the CNE program at the NLN for the past 12 years. He has been instrumental in the development of the certification program, including testing internationally and the development of the clinical nurse educator, certified novice nurse educator certifications, as well as the development of the practical nursing/vocational nursing competencies and task statements. In 2023, he was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.
