| NLN Announces 2018 Grant and Scholarship Winners

Washington, DC, September 2, 2018 —
Select doctoral candidates in nursing education; scholars pursuing innovative research in nursing education; and for the first time in 2018, nursing students pursuing preparation in geriatric nursing will get a financial boost in the coming year through grants and scholarships to be awarded at the 2018 NLN Education Summit in Chicago, September 12-14.
As in years past, the NLN president noted the significance of the NLN's scholarship and research grant programs. "Support for nursing students at every level of the academic spectrum and scholarship in nursing education is critical to the fulfillment of the NLN's mission to promote excellence in nursing education to prepare a diverse, nursing workforce to advance the health of the nation and of the global community," said G. Rumay Alexander, professor and professor and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "On behalf of the NLN, I extend congratulations to our scholarship and grant award winners and thank the members of the selection committees who volunteer their time." Added NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN: "A special 'thank you' to donors to the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education and our partners at Home Instead Senior Care and the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, all of whom make the NLN scholarship and research grants programs possible. We want to do all we can to expand the number of scholars deserving of our support." 2018 NLN-Home Instead Scholarships in Geriatric Nursing Education Earlier this year, the NLN Foundation and Home Instead Senior Care joined forces to foster and promote geriatric nursing education through a scholarship fund, with scholarships to be awarded to nursing students enrolled in such courses of study. Because adults aged 65 and older in the United States and throughout the world account for an increasing proportion of the population, there is widespread acknowledgement that nursing school graduates must be better prepared to deliver outstanding, culturally sensitive care to older adults in hospital, clinical and outpatient community settings. Hence, these scholarships are awarded to nurses pursuing advanced degrees, either master's or doctorates, in accredited programs, and have completed at least half of their academic studies toward their degrees. The initiative includes a comprehensive mentoring component that engages scholars in peer-to-peer interactions, and nurtures relationships between scholars and faculty mentors. NLN Jonas Scholars are selected by faculty in selected schools of nursing with a focus on nursing education research and mentored by scholars in the NLN | Chamberlain Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education. Funds include financial support for the scholars' research through the final year of doctoral study, as well as travel expenses to meetings with mentors at the NLN Education Summit. NLN Jonas Scholars in previous cohorts have since graduated and joined the ranks of doctoral-prepared nurse faculty, fulfilling the grant's stated purpose to advance the science of nursing education through evidence-based research.
