National League for Nursing Concludes Hearst Foundations Grant to Create ACE.P: Comprehensive Blueprint for Teaching Best Nursing Practices for Care of At-Risk Children

Innovative, Technology-Driven Teaching Strategies, Unfolding Simulated Cases and ACE.P Toolkit to Integrate Social Determinants of Health into Curricula Among Wealth of Resources Available for Free to Nurse Educators
Washington, DC, April 24, 2019 — Meet Damon, Thomas and Mia, subjects of the new simulated unfolding cases in the National League for Nursing ACE.P program for excellence in pediatrics nursing education. Damon is being evaluated for autism following emergency admission for uncontrolled diarrhea and vomiting; Thomas, a teen contending with bullying and obesity, is hospitalized for depression; and Mia, a pre-school-age child with severe dental caries, experiences a playground injury. Each presents unique challenges to nursing students who must learn how best to care for at-risk children and adolescents.

Through ACE.P, the NLN focuses much needed attention on community-based approaches to meet the multiple health care needs of children and adolescents. In addition to the unfolding cases, seven teaching strategies cover nutrition; obesity prevention and control; oral health; immunizations; screenings; mental health/suicide prevention; treatments for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorders; sexual and emotional abuse; injury prevention; and potential effects on children and families battling chronic illness. These strategies are made available through the NLN's ACE (Advancing Care Excellence) Program.

Another highlight is the ACE.P toolkit, Pediatric Adversity and Early Brain Development. The highly engaging, timely content — including four modules containing assignments for reading, interactive exercises and reflective essays — guides nurse educators in the integration of social determinants of health throughout undergraduate and graduate curricula. Lead author and national expert in childhood adversity, Ashley Darcy-Mahoney, PhD, NNP-BC, FAAN, associate professor at the George Washington University School of Nursing, director of its Infant Research, Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Institute, and a neonatal nurse practitioner, forged a partnership with the NLN to create this valuable publication.

"ACE.P addresses what has been identified as a critical gap in preparing the next generation of nurses — meeting the growing demand for quality care of children at greatest risk," said G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, NLN president and professor and associate vice chancellor/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. "It's been by now well-established that social, financial and environmental factors not only affect health in childhood but can have a lasting and detrimental impact throughout life, if early challenges are not identified and appropriate interventions applied."

The development and dissemination of ACE.P has been an intensive two-year process, resulting in a comprehensive blueprint for teaching nursing care of vulnerable children. All classroom-ready and user-friendly resources are free for use by nurse educators and are available at NLN.org/acep.

The most recent addition to the NLN's highly regarded Advancing Care Excellence series, ACE.P was made possible through the generous support of the Hearst Foundations and in partnership with the Rory Meyers College of Nursing at New York University, which contributed content on advancing children's oral health.

ACE.P utilizes the successful approach taken throughout the NLN Center for Excellence in the Care of Vulnerable Populations in the ACE modules previously developed to care for veterans (ACE.V); Alzheimer's and related dementia patients (ACE.Z); individuals with disabilities (ACE.D); and senior adults (ACE.S). Each provides evidence-based, classroom-ready resources to nurse educators through technology and online content that include simulated unfolding cases, teaching strategies, a video library, and webinars. All resources may be downloaded free of charge.
