NLN President & CEO Dr. Beverly Malone Named One of Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare—Again!

Dr. Malone Honored for Her Leadership in Nursing & Nursing Education in Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Washington, DCModern Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading health publications, has ranked National League for Nursing President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN at No. 5 on the magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare for 2020. This prestigious recognition program acknowledges and honors individuals who are deemed by their peers and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare to have had the greatest impact on and exhibited the strongest leadership in the field.

This is the fourth time in the past decade that Dr. Malone has been included in this elite annual ranking of top health care executives, medical professionals, policymakers, and leaders in the government, business and nonprofit sectors.

“I am obviously delighted to once again have my work on behalf of nursing education so publicly honored, but feel that this important recognition is not mine alone,” said Dr. Malone. “At the National League for Nursing, we take seriously the commitment to co-creation and collaboration, and thus, I share this honor with our outstanding professional staff, our dedicated Board of Governors, and the hundreds of members throughout the country who serve on League committees and task forces. They also contribute their wisdom, experience, and scholarship to a host of programs and initiatives that advance excellence in nursing education.”

“Working alongside Bev for many years, I am privileged to have a bird’s eye view of her visionary leadership and tireless drive to prepare a nursing workforce capable of delivering outstanding, inclusive and equitable care to diverse patient populations and communities in today’s dynamic, challenging health care environment,” said NLN Chair Dr. Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, RN, EdD, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAONL, FAAN, Professor and Dean Emerita at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and president of The Wise Group. “On behalf of the Board of Governors, we congratulate Bev on this most deserved distinction for her work in general and specifically that for the National League for Nursing.”

In releasing the list of the 2020 100 Most Influential People, Modern Healthcare’s editor, Aurora Aguilar, said, “This year will be remembered for more than the COVID-19 pandemic and election. It is a year that reminded us of the importance of the frontline healthcare worker and the power of collaboration. Every member of this class found ways to help their organization or the government or each other maneuver through unprecedented hardships. The result was often groundbreaking. Modern Healthcare and our readers selected the 100 most innovative and resilient candidates, which this year comprised a record number of women who influenced the course that healthcare took during a global pandemic, continued to press forward amidst uncertainty, and used current events like the election, racial injustice, and public health as an inspiration to do better. Congratulations to our honorees.”

In January, Modern Healthcare named Dr. Malone one of five inaugural Minority Healthcare Luminaries, an awards program the magazine created this year to recognize a shortlist from its Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare whose career achievements have reshaped the industry. Among Dr. Malone’s lengthy list of accomplishments, the editors cited her call to incorporate social determinants of health in nursing education curricula. In naming her one of its Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare in 2018, Modern Healthcare noted her vision and leadership in the League’s promoting diversity and inclusion in models of nursing education and health care delivery as well as efforts to recruit and retain students and faculty from communities of color and other marginalized demographics.

Dr. Malone has been a perennial figure in Modern Healthcare’s awards programs. In 2017, she was chosen one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare, following two consecutive years on the list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. In 2015, that list was headlined by President Barack Obama and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
