New Research Priorities in Nursing Education Will Help Guide Educators Preparing the Next Generation of Nurses

Roadmap Set for Nurse Researchers Studying the Science Behind Nursing Education

Washington, DC — To further establish nursing education in the latest evidentiary-based practices to prepare an outstanding, diverse nursing workforce, the NLN / Chamberlain University College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education announces the release of NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education 2024-2027.

This latest update published by the National League for Nursing provides a roadmap for nursing scholars to pursue rigorous studies that connect the science of teaching and learning to advance the science of nursing education. The resulting body of evidence is intended to guide classroom and clinical instruction in the application of innovative teaching and learning strategies, and lead to a deeper understanding of faculty workforce capacity and teaching practice and factors contributing to student academic progression and success.

“Our ultimate goal with these research priorities is to provide nurse educators with the cutting-edge knowledge and tools they need to prepare practitioners to deliver superb, accessible health care in diverse patient populations and communities,” said NLN Chair Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, dean and Strawbridge Professor at the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions at Ursuline College in Ohio.

NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, said, “The National League for Nursing is committed to ensuring that research priorities in nursing education remain current. Thanks to the dedication of the NLN Scientific Research Review Board, under the leadership of Dr. Barbara Patterson, three key areas have been identified that demand renewed focus of scholarly attention for the next three years.”

NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education 2024-2027 calls for investigative projects designed to:

  • Build the science of nursing education through the generation and translation of innovative teaching and learning strategies
  • Build a diverse nurse faculty capacity and enhance teaching practice
  • Create teaching and learning environments that enhance the diversity, equity and inclusivity for student learning and progression across all academic programs

The guide refers to a variety of contemporary realities and challenges that new research studies must take into account, including: the effects of global climate change on public health; the rise of artificial intelligence and virtual reality; the importance of preventative health and health equity; the impact of social determinants of health on patient outcomes; the dynamics of ethical decision-making and analysis; a spirit of lifelong learning; and an imperative to create cultures of caring and civility to eliminate bullying and harassment in academia and practice.
