Identification of the Problem

Most patients receiving mechanical ventilation support have spontaneous breathing ability, but many manikins have no or insufficient inspiration feature. This limits the role of ventilator simulation with critical care or operating theatre background.

Unique Idea

This unique idea is to modify the ventilation circuit in test lungs with a negative pressure trigger. This generates spontaneous and assisted breaths in the ventilator which, in succession, activate each manikin's breath cycle and lung sound. The application of this technical solution does not require manikin modification.

Objectives

Modify the ventilation circuit to bridge manikin-ventilator interaction for healthcare simulation training with ventilators or anesthesia machines.

Supplies/Ingredients

  1. Test Lung with negative flow or pressure triggering feature

  2. T joint of ventilation circuit

Steps to Creating the Solution

  1. Disconnect the ventilation circuit at the "From Patient" port.

  2. Insert ventilation T joint between the ventilator's "From Patient" port and ventilation "Y" circuit.

  3. Connect the Test Lung with negative flow trigger to the ventilation circuit via T joint.

  4. Switch on manikin, intubate manikin (with closed circuit breathing system), switch on ventilator, and connect these devices with the ventilation Y circuit.

  5. Activate the negative flow trigger, which allows the Test Lung to initiate each spontaneous / assisted breath with the ventilator and the manikin simultaneously.

  6. Ensure that manikin operation does not violate manufacturer recommendation.

  7. Ensure the manikin and test-lung operation is well coordinated to replicate a patient-ventilator interaction.
