Identification of the Problem

Time, money, and moulage skill can be challenging for setting up a simulation. Many wounds that can be purchased are difficult to stick on a standardized participant or a manikin and can be costly. Moulage can stain manikins and take time to do and redo for the same simulation.

Unique Idea

The idea is to make a reusable wound that is inexpensive and versatile.

Objectives

  • Create a wound that can be used and reused on standardized participants and manikins.
  • Increase the realism of the simulation.

Supplies/Ingredients

  1. silicone nipple cover (choice of color)
  2. temporary wound tattoo
  3. water
  4. paper towels
  5. Optional: Tegaderm

Steps to Creating the Solution

  1. Lay a paper towel on a flat surface. Place a silicone nipple cover on top of the paper towel. Do not remove the plastic backing from the nipple cover.
  2. Choose a temporary wound tattoo that will fit fully on the nipple cover. If there is more than one tattoo on a page, cut out the desired tattoo and remove the clear plastic protector.
  3. Place the tattoo face down on the nipple cover.
  4. Wet a paper towel and lay on the tattoo for 20-30 seconds.
  5. Remove the paper attached to the tattoo to reveal the tattoo on the nipple cover. It should be fully adhered.
  6. Allow time to fully dry.
  7. When ready to use, remove the nipple cover from the plastic backing and place on desired location on the manikin. Save the plastic backing to be able to reuse and store the nipple cover wound.
  8. If there is a need to use on a standardized participant, the nipple cover can be washed with soap and water between uses. The recommendation is to use each simulated wound on a single standardized patient. For more sanitary considerations, an occlusive barrier, such as Tegaderm, can be placed on the skin before placing the reusable silicone wound.
