Congress Reaches Budget Deal and Keeps Government Open Until March 23


The Senate has reached a bipartisan deal to increase the spending cap for non-defense discretionary funding (i.e. funding for programs the NLN supports) by at least $63 billion each year for two years. While this is not equal to the $90 billion in relief provided to the Department of Defense in the deal, both defense and nondefense spending caps will each be above the current spending caps. This will allow Congress to finalize 2018 funding for all federal programs and begin work on 2019 funding. Read more...

President Again Cuts Funding for Nursing


The President released his budget blueprint for fiscal year 2019 on February 12. Every year, the President is required to release a budget outlining the Administration's priorities. A presidential budget is non-binding and does not assign federal spending. Only Congress has the power to determine funding for federal programs which is why Congress usually ignores the presidential budgets.
