SENATE TO DEBATE OPIOIDS IN SEPTEMBER


     Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced in August that a bipartisan package to deal with the opioid crisis will be taken up in September. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) is still negotiating the giant legislative package. Senate leadership is trying to clear the bill for floor time as soon as a final deal is reached. Similar to what the House passed earlier this year, the Senate legislation could combine ten bills on opioids from various committees. Read more...

SENATE LEVEL FUNDS NURSING PROGRAMS IN FY 2019


     The Senate overwhelmingly passed an $857 billion spending package on labor, health, education, and defense programs last week by a vote of 85-7. The Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) and Defense appropriations bill includes $249 million in 2019 for HRSA's Title VIII nursing workforce programs which is the same funding level in 2018. It is also important to note that this is the first time in a decade the Senate's LHHS appropriations bill went to the floor for a vote. Read more...

FDA ISSUES GUIDANCE PROMOTING NEW TREATMENTS FOR OPIOID ADDICTION


     The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance to encourage the development of more drugs that can be used in what is known as Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), a leading way to treat people with opioid addiction, through using certain drugs to reduce dependence on opioids. A lack of access to effective medication-assisted treatment is one of the main challenges in fighting the opioid epidemic. Read more...
