NLN Press Presents Three New Books at Summit ‘17

| National League for Nursing Releases Three Titles Wolters Kluwer Health Booth at Education Summit in San Diego, Thursday, September 14 | ||||
Washington, DC, September 9, 2017 - A National League for Nursing tradition of publishing new works of scholarship in time for the annual NLN Education Summit continues with the release of three new titles by the NLN Press. They may be ordered in advance or purchased at the 2017 Education Summit at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, September 14-16. To introduce the books, publisher Wolters Kluwer Health will host a "Meet the NLN Authors" event at its booth during the Summit opening on Thursday, September 14. Visitors to the booth will have a chance to buy signed copies of the books and speak with the scholars. The 2017 NLN publications are:
Critical Conversations, co-edited by the Excelsior deputy director of the NLN Center for Innovation in Simulation and Technology, Dr. Susan Forneris, focuses on building faculty expertise in the teaching of higher-level reasoning skills, using techniques from simulation and debriefing. It neatly builds on the concepts and strategies presented in the NLN Vision Statement, published in 2015, on Debriefing Across the Curriculum, which included a call to action to develop resources to guide faculty in the development and use of debriefing techniques. To help achieve that aim, this new publication integrates knowledge and evidence from the diverse fields of adult education, behavioral health, cognitive science, organizational behavior, nursing, and health care simulation. Such integrated knowledge may thus be used to provide specific direction for nurse educators to create steps for engaging in reflective dialogue with students and draw on specific examples of how to incorporate debriefing techniques across the nursing curriculum. The theory of roving leadership presented in the book of that title co-authored by Drs. Sal Tagliareni and Janice Brewington, chief program officer and director of the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership, does not reflect a pie-in the-sky approach to becoming a leader. Rather, it is based on empirical evidence that anyone can be a leader, thus, disputing the conventional wisdom of "born leaders." "This very insightful work puts to rest the myths that prevent people from assuming positions of leadership and also identifies the obstacles that sometimes stand in the way of a person seeking a leadership role," noted NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "Sal and Janice succeed in providing a unique blueprint for individuals to reframe their thinking about leadership and self-perceptions that may motivate career development and thereby help effect sustainable transformational institutional change."
