Matthew Byrne to Present on the AI Revolution in Nursing Education

Washington, DC — Veteran nurse educator and principal health technology product manager at the Mayo Clinic, Matthew Byrne, will headline the 2025 National Faculty Meeting on Friday, September 19, at the 2025 NLN Education Summit when he presents The AI Revolution in Nursing Education. The Summit, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, will explore The Challenge: Unraveling the Mysteries of AI.

As the emergence of generative artificial intelligence has presented increasingly urgent questions for educators and health care providers alike, Byrne is among the best experts prepared to address them. A nurse educator for 20 years, teaching primarily about health care and education technologies, he has worked in a variety of roles in clinical settings, industry and academia. In his current position at the Mayo Clinic, Byrne is helping design generative artificial intelligence technologies at the cutting edge of nursing education and practice.

His talk will examine in-depth ways that nursing education has evolved in lockstep with nursing practice to embrace artificial intelligence as a highly disruptive innovation. Disruption and revolution go hand in hand, Byrne notes, demanding difficult decisions about what should change and what should be retained.

Byrne will also highlight how, as a national faculty, nurse educators are called to weigh the risks and benefits of AI for students and faculty practice. Given the intricate connections to practice, nurse educators will also need to be responsive to the impact of AI on patient care. Nurses and nurse educators will continue to be at the cutting edge of this revolution to ensure transformative changes that progressively enhance the ways nurse educators both teach and think about teaching.

“We look forward to taking a deep dive with Matthew Byrne into the complexities of utilizing AI in the classroom and at the bedside, which will take patient care to the next level for generations of nursing students and nursing practitioners. AI is clearly the direction of the future, with the hope of advancing the health of our nation and the global community,” said NLN Chair Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, Dean and Strawbridge Professor at the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions at Ursuline College in Ohio.

NLN President and Chair Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN said, “The AI revolution has become far too powerful and essential for anyone to ignore, which is why the National League for Nursing is devoting this year’s Education Summit to its exploration. Mr. Byrne’s expertise in this burgeoning field of knowledge and practice is guaranteed to enhance the learning experience for all Summit faculty attendees, be they novice or experienced educators.”

Byrne also serves on the editorial board and as the editor of the Emerging Technologies Center section in Nursing Education Perspectives, the NLN’s highly respected peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
