Identification of the Problem
Clinical simulation is often dependent on and driven by technology. As a result, nursing educators have become more reliant on the availability of resources such as computers and internet access to complete clinical course objectives. If technology assisted instruction becomes unavailable or not accessible for use, planned clinical course objectives and weekly lesson plans could be unmet.
Technology woes could be related to an institutional issue, individual resource malfunction or simply a lack of resources to support the growing student body. It is the responsibility of the educator to acknowledge the above potential issues and create a solution in the event of an occurrence. Being proactive and not reactive to the loss of electronic support will allow students to continue with their planned clinical learning experience without interruption.
Unique Idea
I created two Excel spreadsheets titled Health Care Provider’s Order and MAR. Each client has their Health Care Provider’s Orders and MAR that are printed in color, laminated, and placed at the bedside. Vital client information is included within these two spreadsheets that allows the student nurse to complete the weekly lesson plans that correlate to the clinical objectives without the use of a computer. Students can learn in their simulated client scenarios by having all the relevant data literally in hand, eliminating the need for advanced resources. In addition, having these physical forms readily available aids the nurse educator in providing quality debriefing at the end of a clinical day.
The Health Care Provider’s Order includes the following sections:
- Hospital Name
- Patient Name, Room #, MR#, Barcode, DOB, Admitting Provider
- Allergies, Diagnosis, Code Status, Weight
- VS, Activity Level, Diet, IVFs, Weights, I&O, Medical Equipment, Referrals
- HPI
- Laboratory Test/Diagnostics
- Question Section/Skill Section/MAR section-dependent on the Client Case Scenario
The MAR includes the following sections:
- Hospital Name
- Patient Name, Room #, MR#, Barcode, DOB, Admitting Provider
- Allergies, Diagnosis, Code Status, Weight
- Shift Time of Medication Administration
- Scheduled Medications
- PRN Medications
- Signature/Initials
Objectives
Health Care Provider’s Orders and MAR spreadsheets are to:
- Eliminate delay in clinical course instruction in the event of a technological issue during the clinical simulation day.
- Provide continued clinical learning experiences in the event of a technological issue during the clinical simulation day.
- Decrease anxiety associated with the lack of or the loss of technology resources with client case scenarios during the clinical simulation day.
- Provide the nursing students with the resources necessary to effectively complete the clinical simulation day.
Supplies/Ingredients
- computer installed with Microsoft Excel
- 8.5” x 11” white paper
- color ink printer
- thermal laminating pouches size 8.5” x 11”
- 9” thermal laminator
Steps to Create the Solution
1. Identify the information that is necessary to complete the health care provider’s order and client MAR.
2. Determine how many rows, columns and cells are needed to display the necessary information.
3. Create the spreadsheet using Excel.
4. Print the spreadsheet in color.
5. Laminate the spreadsheet using clear thermal laminating pouches.
6. Review the Health Care Provider’s Orders and MAR spreadsheets with the nursing students prior to use.
