- Demonstrate the ability to manage stooling when providing ostomy care.
Supplies/Ingredients
- manikin with ostomy on removable abdomen
- levin NG tube
- catheter tip syringe
- 1 package instant chocolate pudding
- water (use in place of milk to follow recipe on instant pudding packaging)
- scissors
- forceps (optional)
- ostomy wafer and bag (2; one on the manikin and one for students to replace)
- ostomy cleaning supplies

Steps to Creating the Solution
- Make the pudding according to the package directions, substituting water for milk. Set aside.
- Cut distal end of levin tube to remove the holes at the end of the tube.
- Place a disposable underpad underneath the manikin. Remove the stoma from the manikin.
- Insert tube through the inside of the abdominal plate and out the hole where the stoma is inserted. Use forceps if needed.
- Thread tube into the stoma and secure the stoma in the hole in the abdomen.
- Fill catheter tip syringe with prepared pudding.
- Attach the catheter tip syringe to the end of the levin tube and prime with chocolate pudding until it is observed at the stoma.
- Apply ostomy wafer and bag.
- Hide tubing under the manikin leg.
- During ostomy care demonstration, a participant acting as a caregiver or family member will depress the syringe to simulate stooling coming of the stoma during ostomy care.
